Huge Congratulations to Team NIJO, comprising of five postgraduate students from the University of Nottingham: Nishanth Yatheendranathan (MBA), Adam Nevin (PhD), Sharil Dewa (MBA), Eldar Naghiyev (PhD) and Ayoola MacJay Makinde-Ojo (MSc), for scooping the Social Value Award at the University’s Postgraduate Venture Challenge (PGVC) competition 2014.
The Japanese word ‘nijo’ means ‘two vehicles’, representing the team’s ethos of using commercialisation to benefit the wider community. The NIJO team worked with Dr. Mike Clifford from the School of Engineering to develop an idea for a solar cooker with heat storage system (see previous blog entry), called the Firefly. The PGVC Social Value Award, sponsored by City Care Partnership, saw real promise in this social enterprise and opportunity for local market development.
Conversations are underway between NIJO and City Care Partnership on how to develop a fully-fledged product to take to market. Watch this space! We wish NIJO the very best of luck.
One of the team members and Mike Clifford met at SRN’s Anniversary Event held in May 2014.
